5 Rules of Salary Negotiation

5 Rules of Salary Negotiation 5 Rules of Salary Negotiation Is it true that you are planning to get a magnificent proposition for employment? It is safe to say that you are asking that your manager will give you a raise this year? Regardless of whether it's the dread of being seen as pushy or feeling awkward about the exchange procedure , experts are reluctant with regards to compensation arrangement. Make it an objective this year to gain the pay you merit. Rather than dreading compensation arrangement, here are five standards each expert ought to follow when requesting a raise: While arranging a bid for employment, don't rush to state yes. Instead, tell the business you need more opportunity to consider the offer. Inquire as to whether you can give a reaction inside the following 24 to 48 hours. During this time, plunk down with the proposition for employment and decide if it's a reasonable offer. After you've settled on your choice, approach the business with your counteroffer and be prepared to arrange a more significant pay. The specialty of compensation arrangement is to trust that the business will make their offer. Except if the business asks what your normal pay is, don't give a number until mentioned. The key is to be patient and trust that the business will introduce what they believe is an appropriate compensation for your experience and abilities. Pay exchange can get you through a crazy ride of feelings. It tends to be alarming, distressing, energizing, and in any event, disappointing. Notwithstanding how testing the compensation arrangement process becomes, try to keep an uplifting mentality and remain proficient. What many occupation searchers ignore during the exchange procedure is the extra advantages they're accepting as a piece of the bid for employment. Rather than exclusively concentrating on the pay, focus on different advantages, for example, medical advantages, a sign-on reward, paid excursion time, and the chance to work from home. It's reasonable a business will be available to offering you extra advantages on the off chance that they can't guarantee a more significant compensation. The most significant standard of arranging a compensation is comprehending what you're worth and what the business can offer. The exact opposite thing you need to do is to demand a more significant compensation and more advantages without doing your exploration first. For instance, in the event that you went after a showcasing job at a little charitable, you can't anticipate that the association should have a similar spending plan as a huge promoting firm in New York City. Before you arrange your pay, decide the amount you ought to be paid for the position you've applied for. This will assist you with thinking about a sensible counteroffer to present to the business. Compensation arrangement is a difficult procedure for some experts, yet it very well may be one of the most remunerating things you accomplish for your profession . By keeping these standards of compensation arrangement, ideally you'll gain the pay you merit in 2019. What compensation exchange rules do you generally follow?

Its an independently employed taxi administration where drivers register their own vehicles and riders can book vehicles, arrange rates, and leave audits. Drivers get the chance to survey travelers as well, so its in everyones wellbeing to act expertly. The positives are simple access entryway to-entryway administration; the significant con, as indicated by pundits, is the administrations ruthless impact on taxi drivers and expert limo operators. On the surface, it would appear off the clock truckers could bring in some income sans work by turning out to be Uber drivers as an afterthought. One, it is simpler to interface with dispatchers and clients since Uber is accessible on cell phones; and two, drivers woul dnt have to hold back to be employed. In any case, the potential dangers may exceed those prizesâ€"you wouldnt must be a prepared truck driver to book rides on Uber, which could bring about less experienced drivers winding up in risky circumstances or harming the notorieties of drivers who are appropriately licensed. There is right now no real way to check that your driver even has a permit on Uberâ€"considerably less to find out they have a DOT-affirmed CDL or the significant supports. There would likewise should follow frameworks, a paper trail to uphold existing guidelines, and instruments to guarantee drivers safety. And lets not overlook, truckers as of now have Uber-like frameworks that permit drivers to book pulls on the web, clients to follow conveyances, and dispatchers to set up and disperse employments. Until Uber can give something in excess of a hazardous open door for autonomous drivers trying to arrange their own work, it doesnt have a lot to offer the as of now popular shipping industry.

FWDay2018 Allens take a flexible approach to balancing work and life

FWDay2018 Allens take a flexible approach to balancing work and life With more than 70 percent of employees* anticipating a need to increase flexibility, Allens is experimenting with different flexibility options that balance clients needs with those of employees. Recognising that flexibility boosts gender parity and employee engagement, Allens is actively looking for ways to encourage people to find ways to improve flexibility in their working day. Head of Allens Banking and Finance (BaF) practice Tom Highnam said his group wanted to create a work environment that gave lawyers more control over their working schedules, so the partners in the group proposed a trial where everyone was asked to consider their flexibility options and find ways to put them into practice. As it happened the pilot coincided with a very busy period for the group, but we were able to make a real difference to our lawyers feelings of well-being and role fulfilment without impacting on the high standard of client service we set for ourselves. For some in the team flexibility means starting work later to avoid long commute times or go to the gym; for others, it was working remotely a day a week to better balance personal and work commitments. What we learnt was there is no one solution that suits all, everyones needs are different. Nick Adkins, BaF partner said breaking down the stigma of professional services firms being unable to offer flexibility to its staff is an important issue. The perception of professional services firms is the stereotype of long hours in the office. In a transactional practice such as BaF, there are often demanding projects with tough deadlines but it is also important and possible to prioritise some flexibility in how time is managed. It is critical we do this to make the job sustainable and to retain our talented lawyers. The pilot has shifted perception so people realise its about balancing available time and personal time and recognising the two can co-exist even in a busy, transactional practice. Nick said. The BaF pilot encouraged people across the team to discuss arrangements within their smaller workgroups and everyone felt empowered to run their schedules. The pilot was based on the simple principles of common sense, trust and communication, which left a lot of room for flexibility in how people worked in a way that suited them best. The whole experience was really worthwhile and we have now implemented flexible working as the norm within BaF and across many other teams, Tom said. Marc's Update - Pulling the Plug and Moving to Mexico [Podcast] - Career Pivot Scene #96 â€" Marc Miller Explains Why He Has Pulled the Plug and Made the Move. Portrayal: In this scene, Marc investigates social insurance, protection, vehicles, delivering food supplements, house rentals, the web, visas, open transportation, and scaling back. He clarifies his arrangements for the following year while proceeding to maintain his organizations from Ajijic. Key Takeaways: [1:22] Marc invites you to Episode 96 of the Repurpose Your Career web recording. [1:34] If you're getting a charge out of this digital broadcast, Marc welcomes you to share this web recording with similar spirits. The more individuals you share it with, the more he can help. It would be ideal if you buy in on CareerPivot.com, iTunes, Google Play, Podbean, Overcast, TuneIn, Spotify, or Stitcher. Offer it via web-based networking media, or tell your neighbors and partners. [2:03] Last week, Marc responded to LinkedIn inquiries with his 'shrewd accomplice,' Mark Anthony Dyson. [2:10] Next week Marc will come back to the vocation turn assessment arrangement Can Sara Repurpose Her Career? for Part 3 of four sections. [2:16] In this digital recording scene, Marc will talk about an assortment of issues around their official conclusion to make the transition to Mexico. This will incorporate things like social insurance, medical coverage, accident protection, autos, transporting food enhancements and prescriptions from the U.S. to Mexico. You can't get everything in Mexico. Presently on to the digital broadcast… Download Link | iTunes|Stitcher Radio|Google Podcast| Podbean | TuneIn | Overcast [2:38] Marc will discuss renting property in Mexico, and their turn. At long last, Marc will discuss shopping to set up their home. Try not to anticipate bringing your stuff from the U.S. Simply dispose of it and purchase utilized or new stuff in Mexico. [2:58] Marc and his better half settled on the choice over the most recent fourteen days to press the catch and sign a rent on a two-room, two-shower Casita in focal Ajijic, Mexico. The main factor in making this move is the foolish conduct of the U.S. Government and the social insurance and medical coverage businesses. [3:18] Marc expounded on this in a post called The Looming Healthcare Insurance Catastrophe for Baby Boomers. Marc's expectation about rates has worked out as expected. Marc's medical coverage supplier has approached the Texas Insurance Board for a 34% rate increment in 2019. Marc as of now pays $1,358 every month premium for a $10,000 deductible arrangement. [3:50] In over two months in Mexico, Marc's better half has seen an endocrinologist, a hematologist, a dermatologist, had blood work done and had her teeth cleaned. Generally speaking they have paid about $150 in charges. She has been treated by specialists with qualifications from top colleges. The three specialists spent an aggregate of four hours with Marc's significant other. [4:19] Mrs. Mill operator's blood was drawn at a neighborhood facility yet for around 200 pesos ($10.00) more, the medical attendant would have gone to their home. The Millers have investigated an assortment of medical coverage arrangements and an overall approach, barring the U.S., with a $2,500 singular deductible, will cost them somewhat less than $2,000 every year. [4:43] If Marc remained in the U.S., medical coverage for him and his better half would have cost $2,000 every month. They could take an overall strategy that incorporates the U.S., with a $5,000 singular deductible for something under $4,000 every year. [5:01] The overall arrangements don't cover previous conditions however Marc's better half's cash based costs have been low. [5:15] Marc discusses a couple close to them in Mexico who are both taken a crack at Medicare. They don't convey inclusion in Mexico, and for anything significant they go to the U.S. Another senior secured by Medicare came back to the U.S. at the point when he had a cardiovascular failure. [5:43] Another senior in their Introduction to Spanish class contracted pneumonia. She was admitted to the top heart clinic in Guadalajara and for two evenings her all out expense was $1,500. She was excited with the treatment and the consideration. The specialist even made a house call to monitor her. [6:14] Marc and his better half are in Mexico for the medical coverage and human services. At that point they needed to confront inquiries regarding bringing their vehicle into Mexico. Mexico doesn't need your American vehicle there. Marc set up a blog entry about it a week ago and discussed Visa levels. On a transitory visa, you can bring a U.S.- plated care into Mexico briefly. [7:04] You can't sell your American vehicle in Mexico. Following four years you need to return it to the U.S. what's more, discard it. Mexico needs inhabitants to purchase Mexican vehicles. With obligations and charges, vehicles are increasingly costly in Mexico. [7:21] Marc has not researched all the parts of vehicle protection in Mexico. In a mishap, you have to call your protection specialist first, and afterward the police. [7:40] Mrs. Mill operator takes certain food supplements and a thyroid drug that she can't get in Mexico. She is a Genesis Pure wholesaler and utilizations the items. Beginning Pure doesn't transport to Mexico. There are delivering organizations in Mexico to encourage that with a location in Laredo, Texas where you transport your items. [8:16] The items are taken through traditions by the organization, obligation is paid, the items are removed from the crate, reboxed and delivered to the organization's location in Ajijic. Where it is gotten and the client pays for the delivery and the obligation on the items. Simply transport limited quantities one after another, as the reboxing isn't cautious or delicate. [9:36] When the Millers return to the U.S. in October, they will carry as a significant part of the enhancements with them as possible when they drive back. On each outing back to the States, they will bring more. [9:52] The following issue is leasing property in Mexico. Numerous individuals simply purchase. Marc isn't intending to do that. You pay money to purchase property in Mexico. There are no home loans. Everybody has prescribed to the Millers to lease. They are in their fourth area in the zone. They chose they needed to be in the focal point of Ajijic. [10:33] Marc's unique plans were to descended in June for a quarter of a year, on the other hand in September, for a quarter of a year, and organize a drawn out investment property in January. That would not work. The rental market in Ajijic is tight to the point that rental operators are approaching individuals for additional properties to lease. Individuals are moving from both Canada and the U.S. [11:12] At least 33% of the expats are Canadian. The high season is October through March. [11:27] There are two different ways to gain investment property. One is through a rental organization and the other is from a person. People lease by listening in on others' conversations. Marc didn't have the associations, so they reached two or three Realtors ® and with their course, associated with three or four administrations. They wound up picking Access Lake Chapala. [12:41] Julio was their specialist. It is critical to comprehend what accompanies the rental, and what the expenses are. A few expats need to lease a property that is completely outfitted and where everything is paid for. [13:17] Water is remembered for the rental. It is typically paid every year. The water streams from the city to an underground reservoir on the property. At that point a siphon moves it to a housetop storage. This gives the water strain to the home. Nobody drinks the water, however it is consumable. Marc gets a 5-gallon container of drinking water conveyed for 20 pesos. [14:24] Taxes are likewise remembered for the rental. At that point there are the web, gas, and power. A survey and cooling take a great deal of power so it can run high. April and May are the most smoking months. Else, you don't utilize cooling. [14:56] Marc took a gander at a few spots where the web was not introduced. The officeholder bearer is TelMex. It is ADSL. There is no assurance you can get a line at a particular property. Marc turned down a property in light of the fact that the web was not introduced. [15:34] Marc was prompted again and again, if the web was not introduced and where you could test it, not to lease that property. [15:46] The rent appears to be unique from a rent in the U.S. It is in Spanish. An informal English interpretation is given on the back, however Marc found a nearby expat lawyer, Spencer McMullen, to go over the rent for him. In Mexico, the proprietor doesn't need to fix any issues on the property on the off chance that they don't influence wellbeing and security. [16:44] Most Gringo landowners don't play those games. Composed into Marc's rent is a condition that if the fix costs under 900 pesos ($45-$50), Marc is dependable, and on the off chance that it costs more, the landowner is mindful. The proprietor is Mexican and has an excellent notoriety. He fabricates furniture and completely outfitted the casita with decent furnishings. [17:28] The Millers found the casita directly in the focal point of Ajijic. It will be boisterous, especially around the special seasons. A portion of the expats head to Puerto Vallarta for the Christmas season. The Millers will go to Austin toward the beginning of October and not come back to Mexico until mid-November, so they will miss the Day of the Dead, November second. [18:05] Marc will purge their townhouse, sparing just a couple of souvenir pieces from his folks. You would prefer not to dispatch furniture to Mexico. As it experiences customs it isn't treated with care. Additionally, American apparatuses don't passage well with Mexican force floods. [19:14] Appliances in Mexico are extremely modest and don't last through too many force floods. Marc will carry a VitaMix with him and leave it unplugged more often than not. How to Name Your Resume File

How to Name Your Resume File Dear Coach Wolfgang: How do you name your resume document that you send to employers? Good question! We don’t really take time to think about this question. You may be inclined to name you resume document “resume”. It makes sense, especially when it is kept on your computer in your job search folder. It is a name that is easy for you to find because you are only concerned with reviewing and editing your own resume. Make Your Resume Stand Out Instead, look at your resume through the eyes of a hiring manager. If you are the hiring manager and 50 people apply for the position, and 50 of them name their resume document “resume”, who stands out? No one. My advice is to make sure to include your name in your resume file name. For example: Amy-Wolfgang-Resume. This is a way to brand yourself. Others choose to name their resume with their name and the company’s name. This could, potentially, demonstrate to the hiring manager that you customized your resume for this position. You may decide to name your resume with your name and a description of a trait in order to draw attention to your resume: Amy_Wolfgang_Top_Sales_Producer. At the very least, put your first and last name in the resume file name. As far as adding the company name or a personality trait, do what you feel comfortable with. Choose Universal Format One additional piece of related advice: send your resume as a .pdf file. You don’t know what type of word processor or operating system the company or hiring manager uses. If they use a different type of system, different software or a different software version, they might not be able to view your resume with the formatting you intended. Your resume could look very disorganized which is not the image you want to portray! Sending it as a .pdf file will preserve your formatting and allow most users to open it. In general, when you are questioning how to name your resume, just think about the recipient. There are lots of subtle but important considerations when it comes to submitting your resume for a job opening. So what are yours? Let us know in the comments section.

How Far Back Should a Resume Go Tips from 5x Certified Resume Writer

How Far Back Should a Resume Go Tips from 5x Certified Resume Writer Posted on March 21, 2019July 1, 2019 by Virginia Franco With regards to composing a resume, many battle with choosing how far back to go, what to incorporate, and what not to incorporate as a major aspect of your profession history. I am a supporter of committing most of the land on your resume to what occurred in the previous 15 years. In this article, I'll present the body of evidence for and against this position, talk about some workarounds that may work for everybody, and toss in my input on what to remember for LinkedIn. Why you may just return 15 years on a resume As far as I can tell, when perusers (spotters or employing chiefs) begin finding out about jobs that happened over 15 years prior, and they see the dates related with them, their cerebrums accidentally go down a hare gap. The hare gap is loaded up with questions like I wonder how old this individual is? or I wonder how old their children are? In my view, the bunny opening is all the more a human instinct peculiarity than a purposeful age separation issue. Besides, in any case, age segregation exists. Constraining your resume to your most recent 15 years can help moderate this boundary to employing, show that your most significant experience is later and that you've stayed aware of current working environment patterns. In the event that your experience is more established than 15 years however isn't imperative or pertinent to the job you're focusing on, think about cutting it. (Regardless of whether you need to work for an organization that doesn't esteem your long stretches of experience is a theme for another discussion.) As an official resume essayist I endeavor to make an archive that is immortal with the goal that the peruser doesn't know from the start if my customer is 35 or 75. Step by step instructions to show over 15 years experience on a resume For some the possibility of excluding prior understanding, especially when they see it as basic to who they are today, is an extreme pill to swallow. Moreover, there are times when prior jobs loan extra validity to an applicant's aptitudes or exhibit some extra ability decent variety that in any case wouldn't have been known. The workaround I am an immense advocate of including a Prior Experience classification when the experience from before 15 years improves the account or story I have made. Here are 3 instances of this: 1) My customer is a military vet and the military experience will reverberate with the peruser. 2) The activity titles related with my customer's prior experience show that they took in an industry starting from the earliest stage, demonstrating to the peruser that they comprehend its peculiarities or subtleties. 3) When my customer is attempting to show their abilities are transferable across businesses, there is an incentive in name dropping, the same number of times organization names are sufficient to demonstrate a specific industry. How a previous encounter area functions The procedure I follow while making a previous encounter area that incorporates jobs from 15+ years earlier is as per the following: Prior Experience Example #1 Identify: Determine which jobs, assuming any, progress or fortify the story I am attempting to tell. #2 Synopsize: Sometimes I do exclude anything over the name and employment title, yet in the event that there's a significant accomplishment, one line is all that anyone could need to clarify the point that makes this job worth including. #3 Remove Dates: In my experience, evacuating the dates enables the peruser to sidestep the beforehand examined hare gap. A proviso: When a point from this Prior Experience classification is especially vital, I'll try to reference it in the synopsis area at the highest point of page one, a procedure that educates the peruser while likewise offering a bother to incent them to proceed to the base of page two. Tending to ATS concerns While still accessible by numerous candidate following frameworks (ATS), prior experience without dates probably won't get precisely parsed into an advanced candidate profile. At the point when I need ATS to precisely parse what I've remembered for this area, I will in certainty incorporate the dates however change the content shading to white â€" making them exposed to the natural eye on first look and possibly exposed when parsed into an ATS. Anyway when managing ATS as the main pursuit of employment purpose of-section (as opposed to sending your resume to an enrollment specialist or leader by means of email), my suggestion is to evacuate the dates out and out permitting the initial 15 years of experience do the truly difficult work. Is your resume ATS inviting? Check it with Jobscan How far back to go on LinkedIn Individuals read LinkedIn uniquely in contrast to they do resumes. At the point when a peruser has been snared by a feature and an outline segment, they at that point need to go the additional mile and continue clicking to peruse prior understanding. Remembering this, when experience more seasoned than 15 years is vital to propelling the customer's story, I will incorporate it alongside the dates. On the off chance that the experience doesn't include any immense worth include, I'll kill it and decide in favor of attempting to keep somebody ageless and maintain a strategic distance from the potential for age inclination however much as could reasonably be expected. An exercise in careful control Deciding how far back to go on a resume and LinkedIn requires a fragile exercise in careful control â€" with human instinct and age predisposition on the one side, and stories and profession focuses that advance the brand or account you are hoping to advance on the other. The workarounds I've shared should assist with accomplishing a portion of that balance! Virginia Franco is a 5X Certified Executive Resume + LinkedIn Writer, Coach and Storyteller whose reports are composed for the present online skim perusers and get interviews. She helps customers everywhere throughout the world to recount to their accounts and test the pursuit of employment waters â€" frequently without precedent for years or in the wake of choosing to make a lifelong change. How Your Personal Brand Changes Over Time - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

How Your Personal Brand Changes Over Time - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career Your personal brand isn’t meant to be stagnant. After all, throughout your career, you’ll certainly grow and change as an individual. So will your business. What influences these changes in your personal brand over time? Your experience New business ventures Switching career paths Interests New skills Your mentors or close colleagues Just because you’ve built a certain brand right now does not mean that it will be your brand forever. After all, companies do this all the time with their products and services. Take a look at the major players in the soft drink industry, for example. Can you even remember how many different slogans Coca-Cola or Pepsi have had? When it comes to your personal brand, there are some changes to expect as time ticks on. Here are a few examples of things that may change for you: Niche Since a niche is a very specific direction, don’t be surprised if it changes slightly throughout your career in your industry. Especially if your niche is related to technologyâ€"there’s no telling what will be different about it 10 or 20 years from now! Brand statement You might find that your branding statement doesn’t work once you’ve switched your focus or transitioned into a new field at some point in your life. Make sure to re-work it so that it makes sense to your intended audience. And don’t forget to update your network on your new venture or direction. Industry outlook For many, their passion and direction is synonymous with their career or business, and when the industry shifts and changes it makes them reevaluate their personal brand and unique selling points. What other changes happen to one’s personal brand over time? Author: Heather R. Endorse Me and Be Damned!

Endorse Me and Be Damned! I’ve always considered the word “endorsement” to have rather flaky connotations. Perhaps it’s because it conjures to my mind images of cheesy personalities or wooden sports stars “endorsing” products they quite clearly would never buy or use in a million years Henry Cooper may well have splashed his Brut all over (boxers weren’t paid much back then and he was probably grateful of a few freebies) but I’m fairly sure David Beckham’s hair never saw an ounce of Brylcreem (especially after Posh got her claws in and started managing his look â€" Denis Compton, the original Brylcreem Boy and personal hero of mine given his first-class batting average and Arsenal career, I’m sure was spinning in his grave). Or perhaps “endorsement” brings to mind (for me) too many occurrences of when they have gone horribly wrong like remembering the one bad meal or a dodgy hotel room after a succession of pleasant experiences and then writing a furious entry on TripAdvisor IN CAPITALS and with over use of !!!!! , **** and the consonants F, K, S, H and T. Spectacularly misjudged endorsements include everything ever endorsed by Tiger Woods or Lance Armstrong (to be fair to the product people who knew Tiger would end up being caught swinging his club around too freely or that Lance would turn out to be the biggest cheat in sporting history) and, of course, various fashion labels aghast at being endorsed by a cocaine snorting Kate Moss (drugs in the fashion industry … how shocking … who’d have thought? It seems such a healthy and low-key kind of industry). Car-Crash Endorsements: A personal car-crash endorsement favourite is Madonna’s $5m contract with Pepsi quickly being scotched after the release of her Like a Prayer video, which included rape, racism, stigmata, has Madge gyrating around a burning cross and kissing a black saint who may or may not be Jesus (Lady Gaga take note this is how it’s really done!) Apparently all this didn’t go down well with religious groups in America and a leading Catholic Bishop called for a boycott of Pepsi and all their holdings (Taco Bell, KFC and Pizza Hut) after Madonna’s song accompanied a much heralded advert for Pepsi during the Bill Cosby Show. This wasn’t a great commercial move by Pepsi whilst at the height of the Cola War. LinkedIn Endorsements: So, when LinkedIn decided to spring a new feature on us networking addicts a while backed called LinkedIn Endorsements, I was not at first all that hopeful or positive towards to the development, having associated the term with too many bad experiences and examples. Unfortunately my feelings towards the feature have not got any better in the following months. My problems with LinkedIn Endorsements are: the pop window asking you to continually endorse a connection is way too annoying. I receive Endorsements from people who, I know, have no way of telling if what they have endorsed me for is true or not. They just add noise and no value. I’ve even seen recently examples of Endorsements that create a bit of humour (no bad thing) such as being endorsed for “Kicking Ass” (bit American for my taste but “Kicking Arse” never seems quite right as you end of sounding like a Hugh Grant fop) and indeed there is a potential mischief that could be created by people endorsing others for non-complimentary skills â€" such as  Racketeering (noun: illegal business or scheme; usually run as part of organised crime â€" AKA being a MP, Journo or City Banker). LinkedIn Endorsements are too easily given and offer no substance as to how they’ve been earned they are akin to a Facebook like, which is about as ephemeral and inconsequential as can be. So I’m opting out of Endorsements from now on. I’m not going to be swayed by the annoying pop window to endorse for endorsing’s sake and any of my connections who choose to continually endorse me for skills they are in no position to judge will be removed from my network. A bit harsh perhaps but it means they’re either a) stupid or b) disingenuous and it gives me a good reason to prune back who I choose to remain connected to (so, maybe in a strange way Linkedin Endorsements will be a force for good after all). What are your thoughts on LinkedIn Endorsements? Let us know in the comments below!

R.I.P Twitter as a Marketing Platform - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career

R.I.P Twitter as a Marketing Platform - Personal Branding Blog - Stand Out In Your Career A marketing platform is a mass communication tool that allows you convert subscribers (readers/fans) into leads. Marketing, by definition, uses a mix of place, product, promotion and price to create a transaction between a buyer and a seller. Its not about brand awareness or customer support. The focus of a marketing platform is to drive revenue for a company. You, as a personal brand, may sell products (books, magazines, whitepapers) and services (consulting, workshops, speaking) on your website. A marketing platform, therefore, would help you drive people to your website and then convert them into leads and then to buyers. Twitter is no longer a viable marketing platform. Im saying this as a very heavy user that tweets about ten to twenty times per day and has an 80,000 person following. The logic Every single day, the value of Twitter as a marketing platform will decrease because more and more people are following more and more people, so your message gets lost. Lets say you have one hundred thousand Twitter followers. If each of these followers now follows one thousand people, that means only a small percentage, who are logged in at that time, will actually see your tweet. Then, only a very small percentage will click a link from your tweet to the corresponding website. The trickle down effect You tweet a message. Only users who are active on Twitter at that time CAN see the tweet. Only a small number of THOSE active followers will have it come up on their radar depending on how many people they are following. Only a small number of THOSE active followers who saw the tweet will engage with it, and possibly either retweet it or click a link. As you can see, as more people are added to the overall Twitter platform, and people continue to follow mass amounts of Twitter users, your message gets lost. It doesnt matter how many Twitter followers you have because the conversion wont increase. Key point: Its not about your follower number, but everyone elses follower number, when it comes to marketing on Twitter. The facts The following statistics will show you the growth of Twitter, why people arent keen on advertising on Twitter (the way in which you would make money), and the low activity level of users on the platform.   One conclusion Ive made is that relationships arent reciprocated on Twitter because people are using it as a mass communications system (which doesnt work!). 106 million registered users (Chirp Conference) Growing by 300,000 new users per day (Smash Summit) 88% of marketers use Twitter (SocialMediaExaminer) 71% of Twitter users dont want to see promoted tweet advertising (Twitter Sentiment Report) 88% of the connections on Twitter arent reciprocal (Koreas Advanced Institute of Science and Technology) 87% of all Americans are now aware of Twitter â€" up from 5% in 2008 â€" but only 7% of the population actually use it (Edison Research) 7% of people are active on Twitter (Edison Research) The real applications Instead of using Twitter as a marketing platform, try these applications: Customer support: people are already talking about you, so why not interact with them? Its been proven again and again that customers are demanding that companies and people engage online. If you fix a customer complaint, then it will prevent a possible viral forest fire. Brand awareness: If you look at the statistic above, 87% of people are aware of what Twitter is. For you, as a brand, if you stop tweeting, your face will stop showing up, but your competitors faces wont. There is an opportunity cost to completely dropping Twitter. Job searching: Stop using job boards and start locating jobs and hiring managers on Twitter that can actually help you get a job. Networking: If youre specific in who you want to build relationships with, Twitter is the best platform to do so. Creating buzz: By giving away something for free to some exclusive content, you can use Twitter to get people talking. Recruitment: I believe everyone in the world is a recruiter, whether you have a job, or work in the HR department or not. You can use Twitter to locate people that you want to partner with, hire, or refer, very easily. Researching: By using the Twitter search function, you can find out what people are saying about you, competitors, partners, etc. Build perception: By having a large number of Twitter followers, its easy to grow your network and open doors because youre perceived as famous, or worth speaking to. Which social networks convert As a business owner, Im starting to think more about conversion, ROI, and other metrics. Based on experimenting with social networking, I see email converting the most, and Twitter the least. Im still measuring Facebook, so Ill have an opinion on that network soon. Twitter isnt a marketing platform because theres no loyalty and the time it takes you to follow someone else is almost zero seconds. When you sign up for an email newsletter, it takes at least a half of a minute to fill in two or more fields (name and email address typically). People who work harder to be part of your marketing list are worth more, and the probability they will convert into customers is higher. How to move from Twitter to higher conversion platforms First, let me be clear that Im not saying that you should stop tweeting altogether. What I am saying is that if youre trying to make money, you will need to start looking at Twitter as a brand awareness platform instead of a marketing database. Create a blog and/or email newsletter. Leverage your current reputation and network on Twitter to start pushing people daily to your blog and/or email newsletter. Tweet about five other pieces of valuable content on Twitter each day to balance off your self-promotion. Repeat. If you can start tweeting less, like I will be doing soon, and start using what you already have to build your blog and email newsletter assets, you will be more successful. Remember that an email subscriber is worth five times as much as a blog subscriber and ten times as much as a Twitter follower. Taking all things into account, Id rather have 5,000 email contacts than 100,000 Twitter followers. Your turn Have you been using Twitter as a marketing platform? What results have you gotten?

The three music mixes for a night in if youre sick of clubbing - Debut

The three music mixes for a night in if youre sick of clubbing - Debut Music Mixes for a Night In This post is written by a member of the Debut Student Publisher Network. Read on for  Christines  curated music  mixes for a night in: Listen, weve all been through the Freshers Week wringer. And while some people love to hit up a good party, some of us get a little worn out from hittin up the clubs. Its not that we dont wanna be social, but occasionally its nice to kick back and host a night in instead. So to set the mood, weve created a few playlists tailored to whatever night in you feel like having, from hosting your own get-together to chilling by yourself with a good book and some red wine. Music Mixes for a Night In 1. Me Time This playlist is for when you just wanna curl up as a little blanket burrito and tune out the rest of the world. Sometimes you gotta just be by yourself, and thats okay. So here are some tunes for just that: taking a deep breath and re-charging. 2. Breakin It Down This playlist is for when you have some friends over and you want to create a fun atmosphere where you can get down and get groovy. Its a mix of nostalgia and heavy beats that work for either background noise or drunken sing-a-longs or both a two-for-the-price-of-one kinda deal. 3. Boardgames and Chill This playlist is for the kind of hang-out where you invite people over for a board game night or a potluck. Here you have music that sets up a chilled out vibe and allows you to talk and get to know each other, so its essentially the antithesis of the pounding club bass. Just what you need for a break from the parties! All in all, its important to know that its okay not to want to party all the time. There are lots of other options you can spend your time on, and its totally fine to need to switch off from going out all the time. Hopefully with these playlists, youll be less worried about FOMO; youre not missing out on anything by doing what makes you comfortable. Download the Debut app and you could totally grab yourself a summer internship  way before anyone else. Follow Christine  on Twitter  @slytherchris Connect with Debut on  Facebook  and  Twitter

You are Employed, How Do You Make Time for Job Search

You are Employed, How Do You Make Time for Job Search First, lets frame the question.    You are employed could mean youve secured a job solely for income purposes.   Or youve taken a job that is just that, a job, not something you are passionate about.   Or, it is a short-term or contracted position. Or it is your dream vocation!   If any of these apply, great. Next, what do I mean by job searching?   NETWORKING.   So how do you continue to network (for your career) when you are working? Identify People You Want to Meet The simplest answer is to just carve out time each week or month to do it.   But obviously this is easier said than done.   What is preventing you from doing it?   Perhaps you dont know where or with whom to network. Remember when you were in job search you created a target list of companies?   That is a great tool and now you need to go back and update it regularly.   Use this tool to identify companies and people you would like to meet.   Stop, look and listen for names in the news related to your passion.   Add them to your target list. Chances are, if you put them on your radar, youll be able to think of a way to connect with them.   Could it be virtually?   Perhaps via LinkedIn or Twitter or even Facebook?   Where would you find people from this company hanging out? Seek Information, Not A Job When connecting to these targets, you have to find a way to ease into  a conversation as to not jeopardize your current employment situation.   You dont want to overtly convey you are looking for a new job.   To quote from my favorite movie, These things have to be taken care of delicately (said with your most wickedly witch voice). Think about initiating conversation in one of these ways: Do they have expertise in an area related to your current job?   You could ask to talk with them about that area of expertise. Perhaps their company has overcome challenges that you would like insight on.   Ask for advice. Basically networking is networking.   It was never asking for a job.   It never will be. Attend Events Now that you have a job, you might be eligible of company training, conference attendance, or professional association meetings.   Take your employer up  on any or all of the above. Carving out time is the most important part of this.   Create your plan, put the time on your calendar and do it.   It may  be morning coffee, it may be afternoon coffee, it may be lunch.   You must keep at it.   Dont ever stop.

Created Synonym Resume - How to Write One

Created Synonym Resume - How to Write OneThe created synonym resume is a special kind of resume that simply gives you the name of a word or name you want to use in your resume. Instead of using a last name and 'First', there is one word in the reverse order, and this can be used anywhere on the resume and the employer will see it as part of the name. Now that you have the word's type and length in mind, you can use it with ease. Instead of writing: Edward J. Smith, PhD, created synonym resume for your title, you can now just write: Edward J. Smith created synonym resume. Before using a word with the reversed order, ask yourself if the person who will read your resume will know that it is just a synonym. If the answer is no, you may want to either go with a different type of word or a new name altogether. You may also find that your boss can't relate to you at all. So, if your job description has too many circles, make it square. If your job description has too many circles, make it squa re.By making sure that the job description matches the skills that you are trying to convey to the reader, you will give them a whole picture of you'll have something to relate back to when it comes time to find out about you. Sometimes it is very easy to tell what is going on in the head of a person who is working in human resources. So, take the time to find out who the general public thinks you are. After you have chosen the right word for the job, try using created synonym resume. Although you should always be careful not to just use anything, the added benefit of this type of resume is that it may come across as more professional than your traditional resume that contains your last name and the first initial.Remember, that creating a created synonym resume does not mean that you can have some sort of silly joke in there to get more sympathy for yourself. You still need to be able to tell how well you communicate your information. In most cases, this type of resume is simply a pla in old job application. Just be sure that the job description is up to date and that the job is what you really want.
